Comic Book A Day – Day 48 – Suicide Squad #0 (2012)

Suicide Squad #0 review

Suicide Squad:  The very short tale of a group of people who kill themselves. The end.

The only issue I have with Suicide Squad #0 is that it basically featured no one presented on the cover except Amanda Waller.  False advertising…

But, that being said, this is a solid origin story, not of Amanda Waller or any of the other characters, but of the rationale behind having a Suicide Squad in the first place.

Amanda Waller

Oh snap! I can’t believe that lady splucked her!

Not only did it give us a little more background on Amanda Waller and how much of a bad ass she is, it also made me want to read more about her in upcoming Suicide Squad comics as well as the new Team 7 book.

For a solid origin story, which is the point of these 0 books, I’m giving Suicide Squad #0 4 out of 6 possible Aarons!

Super Swag – Agent Coulson Mask

Agent Coulson Mask

Agent Coulson’s creepy, creepy, new contact lenses.

Is this the lamest Halloween Mask in the world?  Yes.  It’s pretty much a paper cut out of Agent Coulson’s head that you’re probably going to duct tape around your own head, but it’s AGENT COULSON so you have to buy it and be Agent Coulson for Halloween, sucka!

Get it here.

Comic Book A Day – Day 47 – Avengers VS. X-Men Round 11 (2012)

Avengers Vs X-men #11

No! YOU do the dishes!!!

OK, so someone dies in this issue and if you don’t want to know who it is, don’t read down further.

Don’t say I didn’t warn you.

Last chance…

OK, here we go:

Professor X has died more times than Resurrection Man for pete’s sake!  At first I thought “Who gives a crap?”, but as I read more and more about this issue, I get it.  Professor X is worth more dead than he is alive in a storytelling kind of way.

And it’s pretty nifty actually.  Cyclops began as a teenaged student to Professor X and graduated into the de facto leader of the mutants as a whole.  That’s a pretty good story arc you know?

Cyclops Kills Professor X

No, it’s never enough…there is ALWAYS room for Jell-O!

I don’t think most people saw Professor X as the big death of this series, simply because he’s an afterthought.  The fact that Cyclops is his murderer is a nice piece of story telling and overall I’ve been satisfied with Avengers Vs X-men as a series.

Now that the Phoenix 5 (which sounds like a political prisoner group) is down to The Cyclops 1 after this issue, we can get the final, climatic battle between basically everyone in the world and Phoenix-clops.

As far as mini-series that restart (or softly relaunch) an entire comic universe, I’d have to say that Avengers Vs. X-Men beats Flashpoint hands down, if only because the old DC universe basically just sort of ended, story lines were dropped and characters just literally disappeared.  Here we get basically every character we know and love (and hate) involved and it doesn’t just come out of nowhere, it’s steeped in Marvel history and it’s something that has been building for quite some time.

I’m curious to see how the series wraps up and how they relaunch many of their titles with their Marvel Now initiative.

I’m giving Avengers Vs. X-Men 4 out of 6 Aarons!  If you like big event comics, I say pick it up.

Super Swag – Agent Coulson + Cap Earrings!

Agent Coulson Earrings

Can you hear me now? Seriously, you can’t? I’m literally hanging from your ear!!

Agent Coulson week continues on with these awesome Coulson/Steve Rogers earrings!  These are remarkably well done especially considering they are from which means they’re most likely hand made.

Maybe this is finally the excuse I need to get my ears pierced!

Comic Book A Day – Day 46 – The Flash Annual #1 (2012)

The Flash Annual #1 review

The Flash fights new teen pop group sensation “The Rogues”!

My friend Ray Gootz and I often have late night comic book conversations at the comedy club where he expresses his thoughts on where certain story lines and entire comic book universes are heading.  While he’s not right most of the time, I think he should be editor-in-chief of one of the big 2 publishers, because his ideas are amazing!

Anyway, we were discussing The Flash’s Rogue’s Gallery and how they’re ridiculous since Flash is immensely powerful and they’re a bunch of dudes who basically just possess slightly weird weapons.  Ray asked how they’re even a challenge to The Flash at all?

Rogues Genome Recoder

Much more powerful than a “Lawn Gnome Recoder”.

Well it seems as though writers Brian Buccellato and Francis Manapul had the same idea because this first Flash New 52 Annual addresses this very issue!  Flash literally taunts the rogues while foiling another heist.  The Rogues are then offered the chance to incorporate their powers into their DNA, it’s a “Monkey’s Paw” type of proposition as some of them are left with awesome powers and some of them are left with terrible deformities and intense agonizing pain…oh and one of them dies, but not really, but sort of.

Not sure if this idea was ever explored before, but The Flash’s Rogues definitely needed power upgrades to compete with one of the most powerful meta-humans on earth.

I have to admit that I gave up on The Flash for several months, but this new story line plus the promise of another great storyline beginning has made me a Flash reader once again.

I’m giving Flash Annual #1 (2012) 5 out of 6 Aarons!

Super Swag – Coulson Lives!

Coulson Lives

If Wonder Man, Scarlet Witch, Hawkeye (like 3 times) and Cap can come back from the dead, why not Coulson?!?

This is probably my favorite “Coulson Lives” T-shirt, based on the classes Avengers #4 which brought Captain America back from the dead and into the modern era, geeks and casual movie fans alike will appreciate your awesome taste in humorous T-shirts.

Super Swag – Agent Coulson Is My Homeboy

Coulson Is My Homeboy

He is risen.

Agent Coulson is awesome.  A dude with a cameo who was so likable that he ended up becoming a major character int he Marvel Cinematic Universe right up there with Captain America, Iron Man and The Hulk!

There are a ton of great Agent Coulson T-shirts on the market right now.  This is one of them and you should buy it!
