Super Swag – Mike Mignola Batman Statue

Mike Mignola Batman Statue

I am Shoulderless Batman!

I loves me some Mike Mignola, I also loves me some DC Direct action figures/statues.  So guess what?  I loves me some Mike Mignola Black and White Batman Statue from DC Direct.

I found one of Amazon.com, you can buy it if you want, I live in Manhattan, where the hell am I going to put it?

Comic Book A Day – Day 38 – Lobster Johnson – The Prayer Of Neferu

Lobster Johnson

Read Lobster

If you read EvilNewsDaily.com, you know I’m a huge fan of Mike Mignola and his Mignola-verse filled with Hellboy, The B.P.R.D. and now Lobster Johnson (to name a few).

It’s rare that Mignola puts out something I don’t enjoy.  So…um…this is a very special episode of “Comic Book A Day” because I just didn’t get that into Lobster Johnson: Prayer Of Neferu.

Lobster Johnson

Lobster Johnson: Crime Fighter or name of a nasty S.T.D.?

First off let me talk about the positive:

Mignola has named a character Lobster Johnson and made him awesomely cool.  The costume, the backstory even his catchphrase of “Feel The Claw” is cool.  It’s like someone bet him to come up with the stupidest concept for a hero and make it work…and then he did!

I also enjoyed Wilfredo Torres’ art and really do enjoy the Mignola-verse.

Now for the negative:

The story just seems to be lacking.  I feel like I’ve missed an issue or two of exposition and while Mignola might be setting up characters and plot lines for future stories, it just seemed to end rather abruptly for my taste.

Maybe this proves that comics really do need that first issue of total cock-tease/intro nothing really happens to feel like a full story because as a stand-alone issue, this one didn’t satiate me.

I’m giving Lobster Johnson: The Prayer of Neferu 3 out of 6 possible Aarons.  Even though I wasn’t crazy about it, the art, the characters and the Mignola-verse still make this readable.

Comic Book A Day – Day 30 – Baltimore: Dr Leskovar’s Remedy (2012)

Baltimore Mike Mignola

Although his Vampire serum can turn him into a giant monster, alas it cannot cure his male pattern baldness.

If you’ve been reading my blog, you know I fricking love Mike Mignola’s work.  Creating your own vastly successful universe outside of the big 2 publishers and getting people to really care about and most importantly buy your comics is a huge feat!

Lord Baltimore Mike Mignola

Wood eye? Wood eye? Peg leg! Peg Leg!

Mignola has been expanding his universe even more with Baltimore.  I have to admit, this is the first issue of any Baltimore series I’ve read.  I know nothing about the character, I don’t know if it’s taking place in the same time period as the current Hellboy and B.P.R.D. arcs and I don’t know if it’s even in the same universe proper.

The point is, I don’t care!  I still loved it.  Mignola along with Christopher Golden have set up another intriguing tale of the supernatural and man’s battle against it and Ben Stenbeck’s art is Mignola-verse perfect.

All this did was make me want to go out and buy every Baltimore back issue out there!

I’m giving Baltimore: Dr Leskovar’s Remedy 5 out of 6 Aaron (to be fair if I knew what had happened last issue, I might have given it a 6, so let’s call it a 5.5).
